Bobby Finger co-hosts Who? Weekly with Lindsey Weber, a podcast dedicated to untangling the "Whos and Thems" of pop culture: the people who are inescapably famous but whose actual claim to fame nobody can quite place. Through banter, deep dives, and listener call-ins, the show has built a devoted following among anyone who's ever squinted at a tabloid cover wondering who they're looking at. In this interview with The Signal Award team, Bobby shares why podcasts are at their best when they can't possibly be anything else, his can't miss recording ritual, and why he's just started listening to Heavyweight.
Signal Awards: What’s a podcast you’ve been recommending to everyone lately — and why?
Bobby Finger: I recently took a lengthy road trip with my husband, whose favorite podcast is (and has been for many years) Heavyweight. Despite his many, many years of trying to get me to listen, it wasn’t until our long drive that his smart curation of iconic episodes convinced me to start the show from the very beginning. I’m late—very, very late—but it’s the show I can’t stop talking or thinking about in 2026.
Signal Awards: What will you be listening for in an award-winning podcast?
Bobby: I always respond to a podcast when it feels like something that could not reach its creative heights in any other medium. So, for me, an easy tell of a great podcast is when it doesn’t make me wish for a book, or an essay, or a short film; the podcast is the thing.
Signal Awards: Plug a favorite episode you’ve produced or hosted — what makes it stand out?
Bobby: Since starting our call-in episodes [of Who?Weekly] roughly a decade ago, our listeners (the Wholigans) have inserted favorite non-sequiturs delivered by myself or Lindsey into their messages as sign-offs. When recording the August 7, 2026 episode “Stella Lefty, Rebecca Black & Wawa,” I could tell one was happening as Lindsey spoke her newly coined phrase into the mic. Sure enough, within 24 hours of release, we had received multiple calls ending with… “WaWa PaWa.”
Signal Awards: What’s your recording ritual?
Bobby: Almost without exception I record our three weekly episodes in the morning, with a start time of anywhere between 8:30AM and 10:00AM. Beyond turning on all of my equipment and making sure the apartment is nice and quiet, the only thing else I do without fail is pour myself a large cup of coffee. I can’t remember recording an episode without one on my desk. (I do my best to edit out the sounds of clattering ice, though sometimes I don’t mind leaving in a little just for texture…)
