How many years have you worked in podcasting or audio?

10+ years

What is your current role, in your own words?

I help podcasters figure out what to talk about (in which format) and how to market their podcast in a way that feels sustainable to hit their goals.

What types of projects do you typically work on?

I work on podcast content designed to elevate the message of impact-driven leaders, bilingual creators, and underrepresented communities which normally tends to be either solo, interview-based or mixed shows. The show tends to be educational or visionary in terms of content in an effort to better their communities.

How many years have you been a Signal Awards judge?

This is my first year!

What excited you about joining the Signal Awards Judging Academy?

It’s one of the main industry awards, pushing the industry forward, so it would be an honor to be part of it alongside so many respected professionals in the industry!

What is one recent podcast you’ve loved and would recommend?

I’m a human behavior junkie so I’ve been listening to The Curiosity Shop with Brené Brown and Adam Grant

What separates good audio storytelling from great audio storytelling?

I think it’s hard to say one specific element, but I’d say that understanding pacing and the listener experience. There’s a big difference between overwhelming an audience and keeping them on the edge of their seat.
Podcasters can really learn a lot by doing active listening and reducing the information load per minute.

What project are you most proud of and why?

I’ve recently been invited to an exclusive tour of The Obama Presidential Center, and an exclusive conversation with the former president himself, in Chicago. The invitation from The Obama Foundation caught me by surprise given that I’m not the biggest name in the podcast industry, however my message of creating meaningful change through podcasting – aimed specifically at under-represented communities, immigrants and women – resonated with the Foundation’s mission to inspire, empower and connect people to changing the world. Being able to speak to the President about the power of podcasting, and how he hopes people use the space to share their stories and connect to the community will always be the highlight of my professional career!

What podcasting trend, challenge, or opportunity has your attention these days?

I’ve been really observing the strategies that people are using this summer on their podcasts – every year it has been different. Some clients say their downloads are overall lower, while others are experiencing their best month since the beginning of the year. It’s fascinating!

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to emerging creators?

Don’t take podcast advice at face value. There are hundreds of ways to grow a podcast – and there’s a joy and challenge to figure out which one works for you. I find that many small creators try to emulate strategies executed by a team of 10 and a budget of $100K – but the more you experiment, research and measure, the better you will understand what works for you, your audience and your show – and the more longevity you’ll have in the industry!

What are you currently listening to? (podcasts, music, anything)

I’ve been obsessed with listening to the Artist’s Way audiobook, and in a more practical way, catching up with episodes of Sales Maven.
